Nominated by Lyndon B. Johnson on July 17, 1968, to a seat vacated by Caleb R. Layton, III; Confirmed by the Senate on August 2, 1968, and received commission on August 3, 1968. Served as Chief Judge, 1973-1983. Assumed senior status on December 23, 1983.  Service terminated on January 31, 2004, due to death.
